Vehicle protection plans

Extended warranty for new and used vehicles in Red Deer

Four levels of mechanical breakdown coverage. When a covered part fails, the repair shop files the claim and the plan pays the shop. You pay the deductible.

From CAD $2,300 for 5 years1

Four levels of coverage

Each level includes everything in the one before it. Start with the parts that cost the most, then add systems.

Coverage at the Powertrain level

Older or high-kilometre vehicles, where an engine or transmission failure is the bill you cannot absorb.

What the plan does when something breaks

  • The shop files the claim, not you

Claims are opened by the repair facility, which sends the estimate to the plan administrator. No forms for you to fill in, no adjuster to chase.

  • The repair is paid to the shop

Once the covered parts are approved, the plan pays the shop directly. You cover the deductible and anything the contract leaves out, not the whole bill.

  • Roadside help around the clock

Every level includes 24-hour roadside assistance: towing, boosts, flat tire changes, lockouts and fuel delivery (you pay for the fuel itself).

  • A rental while it is in the bay

Every level includes a rental car program for approved repairs, so a covered breakdown does not leave you without a vehicle.

  • Covered away from home

Plans are accepted at dealerships and repair shops across Canada and the US. Break down on the QEII halfway to Calgary and trip-interruption benefits help with meals and lodging during a covered repair.

  • It goes with the car when you sell

Coverage can be transferred to the next owner. That is one more thing to put in the listing.

How a claim works

  1. Get the vehicle to a shop

Drive in, or call the plan’s roadside line for a tow. Any licensed repair shop or dealer can take the claim.

  2. The shop sends an estimate

The shop diagnoses the failure and sends the estimate to the plan administrator. Only the repair facility can open a claim.

  3. An adjuster approves it

The adjuster reviews the estimate part by part and authorizes the covered repair before work starts.

  4. Repair, then direct payment

After the repair, the plan pays the shop. You pay the deductible and anything the contract does not cover.

What no level covers

Better to read this before you buy than at the service counter.

  • Routine maintenance: oil changes, filters, fluids
  • Wear items such as brake pads
  • Clutch, pressure plate and flywheel on a manual transmission
  • Glass, body panels and paint
  • Collision, hail and weather damage. That is what your auto insurance is for.

The exclusions section of your contract is the final list. Keep every maintenance receipt, too: service records are how you show the vehicle was looked after. Scheduled maintenance at our shop comes with an itemized invoice you can file with the contract.

Extended warranty questions

Is an extended warranty the same as the manufacturer’s warranty?

No. The manufacturer’s warranty comes with the vehicle and ends at a set age or distance. An extended warranty is a separate contract, more precisely a vehicle protection plan, sold by a third-party provider. It covers mechanical failure on new and used vehicles under its own terms, limits and exclusions.

Do I have to bring my car to Northway Auto for covered repairs?

No. Plans are accepted at dealerships and licensed repair shops across Canada and the United States. The one rule is that the repair facility opens the claim, not you, so use a shop that will handle it. For repairs done in our Red Deer bay, we file it.

Can I get coverage on a used car I bought privately?

Yes. Used vehicles qualify, not only ones bought from a dealer. Which levels are available and what they cost depend on the year, make, model and kilometres. Send those four details through the estimate form on this page, or call, and we will tell you what the vehicle qualifies for.

What happens to the plan if I sell the car?

Coverage can be transferred to the next owner, so it stays with the vehicle rather than ending at the sale. Mention it in your listing. The contract sets out the transfer steps, so keep your copy with the ownership paperwork.

Is a protection plan the same as car insurance?

No. Insurance pays for damage from an event: a collision, theft or a hailstorm. A protection plan pays for mechanical failure, such as a transmission that stops shifting or an A/C compressor that seizes. Insurance is required to drive in Alberta; a protection plan is optional.
